Holy Family

Also known as:

Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, First Sunday after Christmas, Sunday within the Octave of Christmas

In the liturgical calendar, this feast is typically on the Sunday immediately after Christmas and takes precedence over the three holy days which follow Dec. 25, and as necessary, the observance of one or more of them is postponed one day. However, if Christmas itself falls on a Sunday, Holy Family is observed on Dec. 30.

The liturgical color is white (or gold).

The setting of the mass is Willan.

The creche remains in the middle of the chancel.

The Christmas wreath is place on the footpace near the sacristy door. All five white candles are lit. The framed copy of the Last Gospel is place on the altar at the North end, lying flat.

The readings at the Solemn mass are intoned. The acolyte intones the Epistle if possible. At other masses the Epistle is read by the acolyte.

The Proper of the mass is at DWM pg. 92.

The Preface is the Preface of the Incarnation (DWM 584)

The Nativity formula is used at the Communicantes (DWM pg. 638).

The Last Gospel is said at the end of all masses (until Feb 2nd). The acolyte should stand up the framed copy of the Last Gospel, at the North end of the altar, during the dismissal. The celebrant reads the Last Gospel while the acolyte and deacon stand at the ends of the altar facing inward.. All servers stand for the Last Gospel, genuflecting at "and the Word was made Flesh"
