A Pontifical mass is a mass where the Bishop is the celebrant of the mass in his role as Bishop with mitre and crozier.

At a pontifical mass, there will typically be an MC to the Bishop and a mitre and crozier bearer (performing those roles) in addition to the regular complement of servers.
