Altar candles

The candles on the gradine (shelf) on the reredos, over the altar.

The six smaller candles (the office lights) are lit for morning prayer (matins) and evening prayer (evensong).

All eight candles, including the two taller mass candles on the ends, are lit for mass.

When the Bishop is participating (as celebrant pontificating, or in choir) a seventh candle (bugia) is placed on the Epistle side.

Servers are responsible for lighting and extinguishing the altar candles. Typically, the altar candles are lighted before the first mass (8am) and left burning until the end of the 11:15 solemn mass.

Moving, replacing, repairing or otherwise managing the altar candles is the responsibility of the altar guild (or deacon), not the altar servers.
