Ablutions

Cleansing of the sacred vessels by the celebrant and deacon, at the altar, after the Communion of the Faithful.

Can also refer to the cleansing of the hands of concelebrants (using the ablution cup) or the Bishop (using the pontifical ewer and basin).

When the distribution of Holy Communion is over, the Priest or another Minister purifies the paten over the Chalice and also the Chalice itself.

While he carries out the purifications, he says quietly:

Grant, O Lord, that what we have taken wit our mouths we may receive with a pure heart; and from a temporal gift may it become to us an everlasting remedy.
